Oh no! Fee for staying in Ireland over three months…

I just discovered that there is a 100 euro fee to stay in Ireland for over three months! If you don’t know already, I’m planning on staying for just under five months, to walk up Ireland’s west coast, and I’m flying into Shannon in a week and a half. This fee came into effect in May 2006, and I just stumbled across it on the NUIG immigration requirements page. This is the first I’ve heard of it (after doing fairly extensive research and going through the immigration process myself in 2005), and it is a completely unexpected expense. 100 euro is five or ten nights’ lodging!

[This post is cross-posted on my donations page.] Oh, and here’s the immigration fee information if you’re interested.
